Botswana is home to two major deserts, the Kalahari Desert and the Makgadikgadi Pans. The Kalahari Desert covers most of the central and southwest region of the country. It is not a true desert in the sense that it receives more rainfall than a typical desert, and supports a variety of plant and animal life. The Makgadikgadi Pans, on the other hand, are a series of salt pans in northeastern Botswana. The pans are so large they can be seen from space, and are surrounded by grasslands and savannas. The desert landscape provides a home for many iconic African animals, such as lions, elephants and giraffes, as well as many unique desert-adapted species like the Kalahari lion, meerkats and springboks.
